The Knitting Knerd

Finished socks! And other awesome things!

I finally finished knitting my first pair of socks! It was a bumpy road, but I made it. I’ve decided that I really do love knitting socks. I started these in November of last year, and I believe what happened was that I just kept getting distracted with other projects. It’s really easy to let that happen, so I’ve decided that, for a while at least, I am not allowing myself to have more than one project on my needles. Not until I can learn how to spend equal time on each project. Back to the socks. I knitted the Sunday Swing sock pattern from the Summer 2009 issue of Knitty. They were really fun to knit, but the pattern was simple enough that I could still have fun but not worry about messing up. I used the OnLine brand in the color Florida. I will post pictures once I take them, I promise. They turned out great! Now I find myself wanting to try a harder sock pattern, because I enjoy challenges. I haven’t chosen one yet, but that’s because I am currently in the middle of another project. Yay socks!

I am still working on the baroness beret that I started in March since I got Knitter’s ADD and decided to pick my socks back up and finish them. It’s turning out really well, and it’s almost done!! I am pretty sure I will have it done this week. I think doing the same type of project back to back must bore me because I was so excited about berets, and then I got bored with the second one right in the middle and decided that I was more interested in socks. After having this happen, another goal that I have decided on for this year, in addition to knitting at least one object a month, is to continue to knit objects that I have not knit before. I will knit at least one sweater-type garment this year since it scares the crap out of me. I need to do more things that scare me.

Speaking of things that scare me, I opened my business account at the bank! I have officially taken the first step to owning my own business. It’s terrifying, but exciting, too! I am acquiring a spinning wheel very soon and already have some wool roving and books on how to dye yarn. Things are in motion, now to just get going on making things and selling them! I have a feeling it’s harder than it sounds, but I will make it happen! In addition to selling hand-spun and hand-dyed yarn, I think I’ll also sell items that I have knit, possibly patterns, but not right away. I have been offered money by a lot of friends to knit them things, so why not make it part of my business? I need to learn to knit a lot quicker to keep up with demand.

Next on my “knitting things I’ve never knit before” docket is the racer-back tank top in the Spring 2011 issue of Knitty. I bought two different colors of yarn because I really think that once I knit one of these tank tops, I’ll really want to knit another one. It’ll also be fantastic to be able to wear something that I knit when it’s hot out this summer. The yarn that the pattern calls for is a cotton/elastic nylon blend and the store didn’t have any. What they did have was a bamboo/elastic nylon blend, and I’m told bamboo is better than cotton because it holds up better, and I’m really excited to knit with it! So, not only am I knitting an object that I have never knit before, I’m also using yarn that I’ve never used before. Exciting! I’m not allowed to start it until I finish the beret, though. Must. Have. Self. Control. I want to knit more socks, too. This could be a problem…

Finally!

I got my next project started. Another beret! This one is slightly different. Different weight of yarn, slightly different pattern, and I learned a new cast on method! I got away with using just a simple long-tail cast on for the last beret, but I quickly realized that was not going to work with this one. I’ve been really dragging my heels about learning the tubular cast on, because everything I found didn’t quite make sense to me, and it got frustrating. I don’t like being frustrated by a hobby that I love. I found a great tutorial on how to do a tubular cast on in the round on double pointed needles. The one in the pattern uses the crochet chain method, but I tried that and didn’t like it. The one I found has you cast on half the amount of stitches you need with waste yarn, and then do an increase round with the working yarn. The specific tutorial I found is for a 1×1 ribbing, which is what that pattern starts with. Perfect! After I got a little ways up, maybe 4 rows, I went for removing the waste yarn that I cast on with. This was very nerve-wrecking seeing as how I had to take scissors to my project to cut the waste yarn stitches and pull the yarn out. However, it worked and I have a gorgeous, round, stretchy edge on my project. I’m so excited! So now, whenever I have a project that calls for a tubular cast on, I won’t cringe and try to find a way out of it.

Also, I mentioned in my last post that I was somewhat undecided about the color of Malabrigo Silky Merino I was going to use, and thought that I would probably use the Plum Blossom colorway. Well, after some deliberation, and my husband’s opinion, I decided to throw caution to the wind and use the Bee colorway. So far it’s knitting up very nicely. If it weren’t for my husband, I probably would’ve went for the safer color. I’ll probably still make it in the Plum Blossom anyway because it’d be pretty, but I’m having fun with the bright colors I’m using right now.

I’ve been listening to the Knit Wits podcast, and I highly recommend it. They’re charming, funny, and I learn stuff about knitting while I’m at work! I learned a new knitting term the other day while listening, the word is ‘tink’. Now, before I say what it is, let me say I’ve had to do this many times and I never knew it had such a cute name, otherwise I may not have been quite so frustrated with having to do it. The term ‘tink’ has to do with knitting back in order to fix a mistake, and I figured out where the word came from. ‘Tink’ is literally ‘knit’ backwards! I just wanted to share that because it made my day.

And on to talk of knitting projects…

So, originally, my February project was going to be some fingerless mitts with cabling and lace-work, and I started to make them out of some gorgeous Malabrigo Silky Merino in the Cumparsita colorway. But, I got so frustrated with them that I frogged them and started a new project. I made my first hat! It’s a beret with a chevron pattern made from Malabrigo Worsted in the Charrua colorway.

Malabrigo is definitely my favorite yarn brand. I’ve only ever knitted with the Worsted and Silky Merino, so I really look forward to trying out the others. I have the Silky Merino in four different colorways, I love the feel of that yarn.

My next project will also be a beret, but a different one. It also has somewhat of a chevron pattern in it, but it’ll be knitted with one or two of my skeins of Silky Merino. I’m in between the Cumparsita and the Plum Blossom. I think the Plum Blossom colorway will make a fantastic spring hat! I also have the Silky Merino in the Bee and Arco Iris colorways. I don’t think I want to use either one of those for this project, though. I think I need to use the Bee for a summer-type project since the colors are so bright and vibrant. It might look cool used for a summer-night shawl or something. I obviously haven’t decided yet. If you’re curious about what any of these colors look like, go check out www.malabrigoyarn.com.

Backtracking a little, I mentioned my “February Project”. I have decided that I am going to do at least one knitting project a month for the whole year. Last year I didn’t knit hardly at all, and that’s a travesty, so I’ve come up with this solution to remedy that. I also want to make more things that I have never made before to broaden my knitting experience. I made fingerless gloves with a whale bone cable up the back of the hand for my wonderful husband in January. As previously mentioned, the beret made with the Malabrigo Worsted was my February project. For this month, also previously mentioned, I will be making another beret with the Malabrigo Silky Merino. I think I’ve officially settled on making it in the Plum Blossom colorway. I haven’t decided on April’s project, maybe I’ll do a shawl. Now, make no mistake, if I can fit in more than one project a month, I definitely will. I’m hoping that I can get this beret done as quickly as the last, and then I can work on my socks that are currently on hold. They’re my first pair of socks and I feel like they’re actually going pretty well.  I’ll report more on those when I get back to them.

I haven’t been spinning lately, and that needs to change.  I learned in January, and then I started picking up knitting projects, so I haven’t been able to make time to keep learning to spin.  I’m learning on a top-whirl drop spindle.  It wasn’t too hard to learn, but my technique definitely needs to improve.  This spring, when it gets nice enough outside, I want to learn how to dye yarn and fiber.  There’s a wool mill about an hour and a half north of where I live, so I want to make a trip up there to buy some wool and yarn to practice dyeing.  I’d really like to be good enough to sell hand-dyed yarn and roving at this year’s Detroit Maker Faire.  If you’ve never heard the term “roving” before, it is wool that is prepared for spinning by being combed and washed, and then carded to make it so the fibers are all going the same direction.  It can then be dyed.  I am very excited to learn how to dye and get better at spinning.  In addition to hopefully having a table at Maker Faire and other Detroit craft shows and events, I’d like to have an Etsy store eventually.

That’s all I have for now, I’ll be back next week!

Good Evening!

Welcome to my knitting/spinning/creativity/whateverIfeellikewritingabout blog! No worries, it’ll be mostly about knitting, possibly about my forays into web development and graphic design to transform this website into something way cooler. So, after a year hiatus, I decided to try the blogging thing again. I’ve definitely decided I am going to make more of an effort to post at least once a week, hopefully more. I’ve already resolved to knit at least one thing a month, which is definitely an achievable goal, I’m also learning to spin, and will eventually learn how to dye wool, so you’ll get to read all about that, too. I have a bunch of other hobbies, also, that I may mention. For this website in particular, I am learning web development and graphic design to create a sweet wordpress theme. I’m also going to get back into drawing, so who knows, I might talk about that, too. Keep checking back for updates!
